From 1986 to 1988, Grandmaster Kwon served for three years in the South Korean military’s 9871 Combat Unit, where he was a founding member and Taekwondo instructor of the unit’s Combat Taekwondo team. This early experience helped shape his practical approach to martial arts training and leadership.
Grandmaster Hee Yong Kwon opened Kwon’s Taekwondo Academy in 1991 and has devoted decades to martial arts instruction, leadership, and community service. His work spans Taekwondo, mixed martial arts, martial arts organizations, and public service. In 1995, he spearheaded the establishment of Taekwondo Day in Washington State. His later leadership roles have included service with the Korea Mixed Martial Arts Association, World Police Martial Arts Federation, United States Taekwondo Grandmasters Society, and Korean Sports & Olympic Committee (KSOC) USA.
